Artist's Statement

Inspiration for a piece of work begins with an attraction to an aspect of colour, light, form or design: To express how the sunlight illuminates the petals of a flower, the way a dog’s eyes come alive when it’s alert, or to see a person’s pose communicating silently, drive me to create.

Everyday a new subject may present itself. Therefore, I am open to the depiction of a wide range of subjects and use various methods and mediums in my work. However, I do have preferences:

I like to draw with charcoal, pulling the image out of the paper with a rubber, like a sculptor fashioning a body out of stone. For exploring colour and painting more elaborate compositions, I use Oil paints and enjoy their physical qualities and versatility.

Portraiture can be very rewarding, both from the artwork itself and establishing a relationship with the person or animal in the process. Portraits are always a challenge of technical ability and observation skills to render likeness and personality with success and in deep concentration, I often loose sense of time working to achieve the correct perspective, subtleties of expression, or movement of muscle under fur.

The world of plants and flowers is often where I am inclined to find my inspiration, with countless specimens to paint that show the entire spectrum of colour, incredible design, all eager to be re-created on canvas. Flowers also have an internal strength and resilience that belies their fragile exterior and this I admire greatly.

Working with collage is an intuitive way of expressing my creativity. I use it as a release, by letting the picture dictate how it will evolve putting together the layers and forms until it feels right and satisfies visually.

Whilst these are my preferred subjects and mediums, I also work in watercolour, acrylics, pastels and printmaking and as mentioned above – inspiration can come from anywhere!

Biography

Rebecca is a versatile artist frequently exhibiting her art in solo and group shows in the UK and in Europe since 2003. She gained her B.A Hons. Degree in 1998, in Fine Art and ArtHistory at the University of Gloucestershire, where she studied oil painting. Rebecca now thrives by working in a range of mediums and techniques and has developed a close affinity and passion of working with charcoal which has resulted in a series of portrait commissions.

Born and raised in the South of England, Rebecca also lived near Lisbon in Portugal for ten years, returning to Oxfordshire in 2014. Whilst in Portugal, Rebecca began specializing in portraits of dogs and in 2011, she founded the network "Create Portugal” for artists living and working in Portugal. Through running Create Portugal, Rebecca managed a group of artists of various nationalities and artistic styles, organizing and curating collective exhibitions and events for the network’s members in Lisbon and surrounding areas of Portugal.

Rebecca currently participates in various local events for artists including Bucks Art Weeks and Thame Art crawl, amongst others. She also runs a weekly art class for adults, works at Obsidian Art gallery, tutored for ColourWheel and has given art workshops as therapy for people with acquired brain injury for the Headway charity. Rebecca lives with her husband and her beloved Portuguese dogs in Oxfordshire.

"Portugal, pintura, pastel ~ Padrão, palavra, papel"
[Portugal, painting, pastel ~ Pattern, Word, papel]
In September 2013, Rebecca exhibited 25 artworks in the Municipal Art Gallery João Pedro Veiga, Equuspolis, in a Portuguese town called Golegã. This solo show brought together works from the last 10 years of living in Portugal. The most recent works, “Totem”, “Come fly with me” and “Interior” were all created on wood salvaged from Rebecca’s house restoration, with a desire to create something beautiful from something discarded and broken. Although the exhibition consisted of artworks of very varied subject-matter, there is a thread that links the works together, be it by the use of words and pattern in the composition or by the different combination of techniques used such as collage, pastel or charcoal. /see photos /and movie

"In February 2011 Rebecca founded the network, Create Portugal.
This network is for artists living in the central and west (Oeste) regions of Portugal. It aims to bring together artists of any nationality, working in a variety of materials and styles who who are active in the development and promotion of their particular artistic practise and keen to collaborate with other members on projects and events presented by the network or the individual member.
Rebecca and other members of the network exhibited together in 2011 at the acclaimed LX Factory in Lisbon and in 2012, the "Prisma Lusitano" exhibition took place at the Sala de Leitura Bernardo Santareno space in Santarém, Portugal. Plans are now underway for Create Portugal events in 2013/2014." /on website /on facebook

May 2006 - Open Studios, live web link showing my studio and film about my work. Organised by the Greenham Arts Centre, Newbury and filmed by Afterstage Studio.
“ A directory of Artist’s studios to visit, exhibitions, workshops and arts events in West Berkshire, North Hampshire and the borders of Wiltshire and Oxfordshire. Associated with the Newbury Spring Festival.”
“Open Studios is an initiative to explore the visual arts, to inspire and educate and exhibit quality and diversity.”

In 2006 Rebecca successfully opened her studio to the public via an on-line link which took viewers on a virtual tour around her studio in Portugal.Rebecca had joined the Open Studios initiative some years before she moved to Portugal and wanted to maintain her connection with Berkshire and the U.K The web provided the means by which this could happen and Nuno Soares Dias (film maker) and Glen Clarkson (technical administrator) are credited with the technological skill and talent in producing the film and integrating it into the Open Studios Directory and website. /film
